Build a Bedtime Sound Routine in 3 Steps

By Health Camper · October 2026 · 4 min read

Kids fall asleep to the same lullaby every night for a reason: repetition tells the brain what comes next. Adults are no different. A steady sound, played the same way each night, can become a cue that the day is over.

Step 1: Start the sound before bed, not in bed

Put your sound on 20–30 minutes before you plan to sleep, while you brush your teeth and dim the lights. Over a couple of weeks, the sound itself becomes part of "getting ready for sleep" — a signal your body starts to recognise.

Step 2: Add three slow breaths

Once you're in bed, try three rounds of a longer out-breath: in for four, out for six. It's a simple way to slow down, and it gives a busy mind one small job to do. If counting feels like effort, just breathe slowly and listen to the sound.

Step 3: Set a timer and let go

Set a sleep timer — 30 to 60 minutes is plenty for most people — and stop checking it. The point isn't to force sleep. It's to make the room calm and predictable, and let sleep arrive on its own.

Keep it the same

Same sound, same rough time, same three breaths. A simple routine done most nights works better than a perfect one done occasionally. If you travel, bring the sound with you: it turns an unfamiliar hotel room into somewhere that feels like your bedroom.

"Make the campsite comfortable, and sleep will come to the fire."
