How to Use White Noise Safely: Volume, Distance and Timers

By Health Camper · October 2026 · 4 min read

White noise is gentle by design, but "on all night, right by your head, turned up high" isn't gentle anymore. A few simple habits keep it a comfort rather than a strain on your ears.

1. Keep it soft

Aim for "background", not "drowning things out". A good test: you should be able to talk quietly over it without raising your voice. If you have to turn it up every week to get the same effect, give your ears a few quiet nights instead.

2. Keep it away from your ears

Sound gets much louder up close. Put the phone or speaker across the room or at the foot of the bed, not on the pillow. If you use earbuds or sleep headphones, use the lowest volume that works — and be careful falling asleep with them in all night.

3. Use a sleep timer

Many people only need the sound while they're falling asleep. A timer of 30 to 60 minutes lets the room go quiet once you're out. If you wake easily in the early morning, a longer timer — or all night at a very low level — may suit you better.

4. Extra care for babies

Infant ears are more sensitive. A 2014 study in Pediatrics (Hugh et al.) measured 14 infant sleep machines at full volume and found every one could exceed the 50 dBA limit recommended for hospital nurseries when placed close to the crib — three were loud enough to risk hearing damage over a full night. The researchers' advice: place the machine well away from the crib (paediatric guidance commonly says at least 2 metres / 7 feet), keep the volume low, and don't run it longer than needed. When in doubt, ask your paediatrician.

5. Don't use it to cover a bigger problem

White noise can soften a noisy room. It can't fix loud snoring with gasping, pain, or insomnia that's lasted for months. Those deserve a conversation with a doctor.

"Soft, far away and on a timer — that's the whole safety manual."

A sleep timer built in

In Health Camper, tap the moon on the Sounds tab to set a sleep timer, and the sound fades out after you've drifted off. It keeps playing with the screen locked until the timer or you switch it off.
